Sabangan

Commissioned by WeForest · 2014

A short documentary, made in 2014 for WeForest, about Sabangan, in the north of Mindanao in the Philippines, and about the people who are bringing the forest back.

01

A vanished forest

Between 1960 and 1990 more than 85 percent of the 250,000 hectares of Sarangani forest was felled. Today only 12 percent remains.

Where rainforest once stood there are now bare slopes, dried-up stream beds and soil that washes away a little more with every downpour.

Planting together

WeForest works with the local community on tree nurseries and replanting. Schoolchildren join in the planting; families look after the young trees.

The film follows that work up close: from the nursery to the first saplings on the slope.
